Tax-Free Japan

Japan tax-free works per receipt: miss one item and the whole purchase isn't refunded

The rule to watch most closely under the new tax-free system is the per-receipt rule. Customs checks each purchase as a whole when you leave Japan, and if even one item from that purchase is missing, none of it is refunded — including the items you still have.

How to shop safely

  1. 1Pay separately for anything you'll eat or use in Japan, or give to someone in Japan, so it's not on the same receipt as the goods you're taking home.
  2. 2Only put items on one receipt if you're sure to take all of them out of Japan.
  3. 3Keep the receipt and take a photo of it. At departure you can quickly see which items belong to the same purchase.
  4. 4Keep tax-free goods in their original boxes and bags, packed so you can take them out easily.
